'Next to my husband [Miller], and along with Marlon Brando, I think Yves Montand is the most attractive man I've ever met' Marilyn Monroe
In 1959, Arthur Miller and Marilyn were having a hard time to find a suitable male lead for her upcoming film comedy Let's Make Love. However, after going to a one-man show on Broadway played by Yves, she knew she had found just the man. As an established actor, but relatively unknown in the US, Frenchman Montand jumped at the chance.
During the filming of Let's Make Love he and his wife took up residency at the Beverly Hills hotel, adjacent to the suite occupied by the Millers. As fate would have it, Arthur Miller and Montand's wife were soon required elsewhere and Marilyn and Montand were left alone. Of course he claimed that she threw herself at him:
'Perhaps she had a schoolgirl crush. If she did, I'm sorry. But nothing will break up my marriage,' he said.
The scandal attached to Montand's affair with Marilyn eventually ended up hurting his career.
